If that is a towel on the bottom of the cage I would get that out asap. Use fleece instead. I would also get those ramps out too. I have a chin here that had to have a leg amputated due to ramps. They are not safe at all.

They are not safe at all. I second that advice! He'll eat the towel, and the ramps WILL cause an injury, chins don't climb, they jump. Even the wire shelves can be dangerous. You are going to need to replace them or at least cover them with wood or fleece. I thought you had owned chins before? Am I remembering that wrong?

Awe there's Kiwi. I agree with Tanya about the towel if it is at the bottom of the cage. You'd want to remove it as Kiwi is into a taste everything stage. Try the fleece liner I sent with him. He will taste the top, but bottom will be intact. Also, please avoid plastic, it's just not good for them if they are chewing and eating!

Wow what a sweety! It sounds like you already "love the shit outta him" hahah He looks like he has lots to keep him busy! I deffinately agree with Kara and Tanya remove the ramps ASAP and cover the shelves. I just lost my chin because of a leg injury.

Im going to have to chime in here and agree with what is being said. On all forums it says that fleece is the only safe fabric to be used for chinchillas. towels are basically a bunch of strings...and can or will cause a health problem in the near future, especially because he is in a new home, and in exploration mode. The wire ramps, or any ramp, are absolutely not needed. Chins arent ferrets. And the wire shelving needs to be covered up with fleece covers, or replaced with wood shelves that you can either make, or purchase online. I know I am repeating everything that was said above, but I just feel strongly that Kiwi needs a good furever home, and he deserves the best, so I hope you will take the advice, and give this little furrbutt the best life he never even dreamed of

Feeling a bit beat up here having just answered Tanya's email and the same comments. Nicole has one of her babies in the exact same cage ramps and all. I also see in the avitar photo Keshia, your chin is standing on the same cage ledge surface. I have also explained to both Nicole and Tanya I am having a friend make the ledges.
I have another dish on order that will attach up there and it should be here this week. I had it in there until I dug out his dish from Nicole.
As far as the towel my friend had him in his cage before I could tell her hang on I wanted to put down a fleece he was familiar with. I have his own fleece ready when he's out for play time.
I love him and will be doing everything to keep him safe and happy.

Dont feel beat up Allison. Kiwi will be very happy with you and all you provide for him. This is all constructive criticism that is being given from people just like you who understand that you love him. Hopefully you will take the comments in a positive light and continue to use the forum as a source for information for the wellbeing of all chinchillas. I cant wait to see the cage all finished! Im sure it will be great!!!

Ramps are considered not to be safe. I know Nicole has them and that is her choice and it's great that there hasn't been any issues.
However, most of us would not leave ramps in, they aren't recommended and there have been chins that get injured with them. I have the tripod rescue here that lost a leg due to a ramp. I have heard of too many chins getting a leg caught or a toe ripped off over the years. Accidents do happen and chins are crazy.
Kiwi is now yours and it's obviously your choice but why risk it? I hope you get the towel out asap.

Sorry, I have to agree with Tanya's statement as well.
Ramps and wire shelves, for that matter, should never been considered safe. IMO it's like an accident waiting to happen or like playing Russian Roulette with your chins life. I've heard of far too many accident and horror stories, another one just the other day that took a chin's life. I figure why take the chance. Think of how bad you would feel if something DID happen and you knew it could have been prevented.
I'll get off my soap box now.

It was being treated for fungus-Alison is aware of this, is aware of treatment and agreed to take Kiwi under that condition. Just hope she is keeping it up and it doesn't get worse!
